Purpose of the Procedure
Labiaplasty is the surgical procedure that reduces the size of the labia minora. Hypertrophy of the labia minora can cause:
- Discomfort when wearing tight clothes or pants
- Discomfort during physical exercise, sports, or sexual activity
- Difficulty with hygiene and local irritation
Hypertrophy can occur:
- From birth
- During puberty
- After pregnancy or childbirth
Surgical Procedure
The procedure to reduce the labia minora lasts approximately 2 hours and is performed using magnifying glasses to ensure perfect approximation of the labial edges. The procedure is not extremely complicated, but it is meticulous.
Important aspects:
- Very short procedures (30 minutes) are avoided, as they can cause deforming scars and pain
- It is usually performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with intravenous sedation
Healing
- Resumption of normal activities and work: 5–7 days postoperatively
- Resumption of sexual activity: approximately 6 weeks postoperatively
